About IWTD I

Founded by designers who wanted a different school — and built one in twelve weeks at a time.

In 2019, Mariana Holcomb, a former IDEO design lead, and David Park, a Cooper Union alumnus, opened IWTD I in Brooklyn to teach the way studios actually train designers: in cohorts, on real briefs, under the eye of a working senior. The school has since graduated 5,400 designers across 47 countries.

The founding story

A school built in opposition to the infinite-scroll course catalog.

Mariana Holcomb spent eight years at IDEO leading product engagements for clients in healthcare and financial services. David Park taught the senior studio at Cooper Union for a decade and ran his own brand-identity practice in between. By 2018 they had both watched the same thing happen to junior designers they were mentoring: they would sign up for a self-paced video library, finish three modules, and quietly abandon it.

The reason was not laziness. The reason was that no one was in the room. There was no crit on Friday, no mentor reviewing the work, no cohort waiting on the other side of the deadline. The infinite-scroll model had optimized for breadth of catalog and never for the moment when a beginner actually needs someone to tell them their layout is unresolved.

IWTD I was founded in 2019 as the school that Mariana and David wished had existed when they were starting out. Every program runs as a fixed cohort with a published start date. Every student is paired with a working senior designer from companies like Airbnb, Figma, and IBM at a 1:8 mentor-to-student ratio. Every program ends with a graduate portfolio reviewed by an external hiring panel of 40-plus design directors — the only offering of its kind in the online bootcamp category, and a feature the founders added after watching their first cohort land jobs on the strength of that review.

In 2022 the institute closed an $11.2M Series A led by Emergent Ventures, used to expand the mentorship network and the corporate hiring partnerships that now include Shopify, Atlassian, and more than 380 agencies. The school is headquartered in Brooklyn with a satellite studio in Lisbon, employs 38 full-time staff, and contracts a bench of 64 senior designer mentors across time zones. The publishing record has kept pace: four published curricula authored by the founders and their faculty, features in Fast Company, A List Apart, and Design Week, two consecutive Course Report awards for Best Online Design Program, and an NPS of 71 across the 2023 and 2024 cohorts.

The 12-week certificate, not a four-year tuition loan, is the unit of value. Everything else on this page is the evidence that the unit holds.

The GreyB Research audit, 2024

The 93% placement rate is verified, not self-reported.

Bootcamp placement statistics are easy to overstate. Ours were independently audited by GreyB Research, the IP and market intelligence firm, in late 2024. The audit reviewed 14 consecutive cohorts completed between 2019 and 2024 and confirmed a 93% job-placement rate within 180 days of graduation.

By the numbers

The institute is staffed like a school, not a content site.

  • 5,400+ Graduates since 2019 Across 14 cohorts in UX/UI, product, and graphic design
  • 47 Countries represented As of January 2026
  • 38 Full-time staff Brooklyn HQ and Lisbon satellite studio

Mentor-to-student ratio of 1:8 across every program. Mentors are paired to students by industry focus, not assigned at random.

Credentialing & accreditation

What graduates actually receive — and what it counts toward.

The IWTD I Certificate

Graduates of the 12-week program receive an IWTD I Certificate in their program track (UX/UI Design, Product Design, or Graphic Design). The certificate is issued by IWTD I, Inc. and records the program of study, the cohort dates, and the mentor of record.

IWTD I is not a degree-granting institution. The certificate is a credential of completion, not a diploma, and is not accredited by a regional or national university accreditor.

The portfolio produced during the program is reviewed by an external hiring panel of 40+ design directors drawn from hiring partners — a separate deliverable from the certificate itself.

DMI credit-recommendation

IWTD I is accredited by the Design Management Institute, the international body that maintains the Certified Design Manager credential. The IWTD I 12-week curriculum is credit-recommended toward the CDM pathway for graduates who go on to manage design teams.

Credit-recommendation is not the same as a university degree. It means the DMI’s review body has evaluated the curriculum and judged it equivalent in scope and rigor to a defined portion of the CDM’s continuing-education requirement.

For prospective students comparing programs: the certificate proves you completed the work; the portfolio proves you can do the work; the DMI credit-recommendation proves an external professional body has reviewed the curriculum.
